We’re Gonna Build Something this Summer

The New Old-Fashioned is gearing up for a blockbuster summer right here in Dayton with a bunch of great local shows, including five appearances at Yellow Cab Tavern!

Our “Summer at the Cab” kicks off with Sideshow 14 on May 24th.  We’ve had the great fortune of playing Sideshow several times over the past few years, and it is always a BLAST. Some of the best bands in Dayton will be turning up, including Trey Stone & the Ringers, Age Nowhere, The Typical Johnsons, Charlie & Amanda Jackson and Sadbox. You’ll also have the opportunity to check out all that our local arts scene has to offer. We’re slotted for late Friday, but you do not want to miss a second of this lineup!

Here’s a clip of us rocking at Sideshow 11:

Following Sideshow, we’ll be playing a string of dates with some of our favorite bands from the Dayton and Cincinnati areas. We’ll be back at Yellow Cab on June 1st supporting The Tillers, a great folk/bluegrass band from Cincy that just put out a new record last year on Sofaburn Records. Then we’re heading to Blind Bob’s on June 14th to help Seth Canan & the Carriers celebrate the release of their second record, Strange Forces. Finally, we’ll round out June with a trip up to Springfield for a night of great beer and music at Mother Stewart’s on June 21st with our great friends in Neo-American Pioneers.

Beginning at the end of July, we will begin a three-show run at Yellow Cab that will take us through the end of the summer. On July 27th, we’re putting on a show with our buddies the Repeating Arms. It’s been almost 4 years since we released our “Brollaboration”, 2015’s Hilltops and Highways EP, so expect to hear at least a few tunes from that! On August 17th, we’re playing the afterparty for Come Together: A Rooftop Beatles Tribute along with the other original bands that have lent members to the Beatles project (Lioness, Cherry Lee & the Hot Rod Hounds, Bribing Senators and Seth Gilliam and the Fake News). And finally, we’ll end our “Summer at the Cab” with Sound Valley Summer Music Festival, a great party featuring a killer lineup that includes Amber Hargett & the Who’s Who, Salvador Ross, Nightbeast, Tino, The 1984 Draft, The Boxcar Suite and plenty more.

"Radio Waves" Live at the Hilltops & Highways Release Show in 2015:

Throughout the summer, we’re going to be digging through our records and revisiting some lesser-played songs from our first two records, as well as plenty of material from our latest album, Small Town, Midwest, USA! We’re also going to be recording all five Yellow Cab shows, so there could be a few surprises coming at the end of 2019. Either way, we’re looking forward to a great summer here in Dayton– we hope to share it with you!

New Year, New Live Recordings, New Shows, New Old-Fashioned!

2017 is here, and The New Old-Fashioned has big plans for the new year!

First, we've got a brand-new batch of live recordings to share with you. Remember those videos that our great friends from TreblePhonic put out back in August that featured us performing live at Popside Recording? Well, we're happy to announce that we'll be releasing three singles featuring the performances from those sessions over the next three months, as well as three unreleased cover tunes that we cut that day. Check out the first installment, Treblephonic Sessions Vol. 1, which features a live take of "Home" backed with our version of one of our favorite tunes, the Replacements' "Can't Hardly Wait". It's available for FREE right here or on our Bandcamp page. Take a listen.

We're also gearing up for a few months of shows in the Dayton area and beyond! To kick the year off right, we're helping Warped Wing Brewing Company celebrate its 3rd anniversary with a Beer Bash. Join us, Todd the Fox and the Repeating Arms on Saturday, January 14th beginning at noon as we enjoy a great day of music and beer. Stay tuned for more show info!

Finally, thanks to everyone who helped us make 2016 a great year! Below you can find a few leftover performances from the tail end of 2016 that we have yet to post on the site. You can also search our website for more videos from the past year and beyond. Here's to 2017!

"Rockin Around the Christmas Tree," "Small Town, Midwest" and "27" From Holidayton 2016

"This Old Town" and "Pride of Downtown" from the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience

As always, special thanks to Richard Brown for these videos!

New Videos & Upcoming Shows

The New Old-Fashioned is excited to announce a brand new series of videos!

Back in June, the band made the short trip up to Popside Recording in Troy (where we recorded Low-Down Dirty Summer Nights) to take part in a pretty awesome project. Don Thrasher and Rusty Pate of TreblePhonic asked us to participate in their “TreblePhonic Presents…” video series, which has already featured some great artists from Dayton and beyond, including the Repeating Arms, Cricketbows, Tod Weidner and Paige Beller.

Well, the first two videos are here for your viewing pleasure, and they turned out great! Watch our performance of “Home” live in the studio below. The videos also contain interviews with Don and Rusty; in this one we discuss the inspiration, composition and recording of "Home," as well as the formation of the band and our pre-TNOF past together.

In the second video, we discuss how a Who concert and an offhand comment led to Matt's entrance into the band. We also perform "27" and talk about constructing that song's vocal bridge. Watch out for the close-up of Tommy's bare feet!

And finally, here's "Words." During the interview section, we talk a little about our first show, open up about our drinking habits and, well, get a little goofy.

Be sure to head over to TreblePhonic to view more of their excellent videos! Also, stay tuned to our website and Facebook page - more videos are coming in the very near future.

We’ve got two shows in the Dayton area this weekend: first, we’ll be continuing our string of annual performances at the Greene County Fair (four more years!) on Friday evening
. Our great friend Charlie Jackson will be kicking things off with an acoustic outlaw country set; we’ll follow at 8 p.m. If you’re in the Xenia area on Friday, come out and enjoy some music and some fried cheese on a stick.

Following on Saturday, we’re heading over to Dayton for the Fifth Annual Buckeye Backroads Summer Jam at Buckeye Harley Davidson. We’re happy to support the Swon Brothers and Mack McKenzie, and proceeds from the event go to The Dayton Children’s Hospital and K99.1 FM Cares for Kids Radiothon. Tickets are available via Buckeye Harley Davidson; come out and help us support a great cause!

Although shows are slowing down just a tad over the next month or so, we have more on the horizon. Follow us right here or Facebook or Twitter for regular updates, videos and show announcements!

Shrug Release Show this Saturday

Guys. GUYS. Try to keep breathing. No need to pinch yourself: this is the real world, and the release of the new Shrug album, Age of Ashes, is less than a week away. Join us this Saturday, June 11th, for the release party at the Yellow Cab. It’s going to be a big one. The members of The New Old-Fashioned could not be more excited to support Shrug for this momentous occasion, as they have been a HUGE influence of our music from the get-go.

Because life is great, we’ve had a chance to listen through Age of Ashes and it’s fantastic. Shrug has put together an incredibly tight set of songs that… well, you’ll see. You can check out the “Radio Madonna” music video right here, or head over to the band’s Facebook page to preview another tune, “Sunday Sleepin’.”

We were there! I see a blurry David at 3:40.

As part of this week’s fun, David put together a stripped-back version of “Further and Further,” the second track from Shrug’s Whole Hog for the Macho Jesus. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

As if all this excitement wasn’t enough, Shrug has teased that, in addition to their set of original songs, the band is going to perform a classic record from the annals of rock history from front to back at the show. The performance is going to feature plenty of guests from the local community and should be a nice capper to a great Saturday. You’ll have to show up to find out which record they picked, but rest assured: it’s going to be AWESOME. For reference, Shrug played through Ziggy Stardust for the release of the self-titled record in ’02 and Abbey Road for the Whole Hog release in ’05.

Yeah. We found it.

Before Saturday’s celebration of all things Shrug, we’ll be making the short drive over to Muncie, IN on Friday for another gig at Be Here Now, this time with Let’s Be Leonard and Elroy Meltzer. We hope to see some of our Indianapolis-area friends!

If you can’t make it out to any shows this weekend, you’ll still have plenty of chances to stop by and enjoy some music this Summer in Dayton and beyond, including several festival gigs. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more info.

3-State Mini-Tour Coming Up This Weekend!

Get excited, out-of-towners: The New Old-Fashioned is hitting the road again this weekend. We’re gearing up for a long weekend on the road, which will include our very first performances in Kentucky and West Virginia.

New Old-Fashioned Spring Tour Dates

Our little weekend mini-tour kicks off this Friday at Baysos Sports Pub in Grayson, KY with our soon-to-be friends Tyler Childers and the Food Stamps. We’ll then be travelling over the state line to Fayetteville, WV for a great Saturday night with Downtown King at the 35th Star.

But wait, there’s more! Sunday we’ll be making the trek back through Ohio (wave as we pass by) to Indianapolis for a rare Sunday gig with Frontier Folk Nebraska at the Melody Inn. We’ve been huuuge fans of these guys ever since we saw them at Dayton Music Fest in 2014, so we’re stoked to be splitting the bill with them for the first time. We hope to see all our Indianapolis friends!

Not THAT type of mini-tour

This trip is also likely to mark our final voyage before we break in of our as-yet-to-be-named new van. (Did you follow that? Good.) We always discuss “levels of success” that a small band such as ours has achieved. Here’s to adding “Not having to cart around all our gear and four sweaty dudes in grandma’s minivan” to the list!

And don’t worry Dayton; our next local gig is not far off! We’ll be joining the LEGENDARY Shrug for the release of their 5th record at the Yellow Cab on June 11th. In addition to their own fantastic repertoire, these guys have committed yet again to the tradition of playing a classic record front to back for the release party. Let the speculation commence.

We're sure to have our music and merchandise with us on the road this weekend, but you can check out all of our releases and view some live videos right here on our website! We love to hear feedback, so please feel free to leave a comment below. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more information on coming shows and music!
